Dorset UK- Canford Renewable Energy is proud to announce that its Dorset Green Hydrogen project is now fully operational, marking a significant milestone in the UK’s transition to sustainable energy. This project represents the first commercially operational green hydrogen production facility in the South West of England. The facility produces green hydrogen from renewable electricity inputs, contributing to the decarbonisation of the region’s energy supply and supporting the UK’s net-zero ambitions.
Located at the Canford Renewable Energy site in Wimborne, near Poole, the Dorset Green Hydrogen project harnesses solar and biogas-generated electricity to power an electrolyser, producing green hydrogen, a clean, zero-emission fuel. This green hydrogen is supplied to local businesses and transport operators, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Green hydrogen produced on-site has already been used to fuel hydrogen-powered buses, fuel cell generator demonstrations and fuel cell testing. It is also being used to commission tube trailers and refuelling stations further afield.
“We are thrilled to see the Dorset Green Hydrogen project come to life,” said Nathan Ross, Managing Director of Canford Renewable Energy. “This project exemplifies our commitment to innovation and sustainability, and we believe it will play a key role in building a greener future for Dorset and beyond.”
The project has been developed in collaboration with local stakeholders and has been partly funded by a loan from Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership’s Growing Places Fund and a grant from Dorset Council’s Low Carbon Dorset programme. Hydrogen is a major investment opportunity for Dorset and this project acts as a catalyst for a hydrogen economy, whilst providing a vital boost to supporting Dorset to achieve is net zero targets.

About Low Carbon Dorset
The Dorset Green Hydrogen project received £1.5million in grant funding from Low Carbon Dorset. Low Carbon Dorset, established by Dorset Council in 2018, offers free expert technical advice and grant funding to help boost Dorset’s low-carbon economy and reduce its carbon footprint. This support is available to businesses and community groups within the Dorset Council area, aiming to enhance energy efficiency, install renewable energy solutions, and introduce new low-carbon products and processes to the market.
To date, the programme has awarded over £7.4 million in grant funding to projects across Dorset, assisting more than 750 organisations in reducing the county’s carbon footprint.
Low Carbon Dorset is part-funded by the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF), a key component of the government’s Levelling Up agenda. The SPF provides £2.6 billion for local investment by March 2025, with the goal of improving pride in place and increasing life chances across the UK, investing in communities and place, supporting local business, and people and skills.
