Biomass

In 2011/12 as a new challenge we took it upon ourselves to diversify into a district heating system at one of our sites in Dorset using a Biomass wood chip/pellet boiler unit. Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) was quite an attraction at the time to encourage Biomass users which we became one of.

Project Description

We have sourced a pellet supplier that uses clean wood offcuts for its product rather than a virgin material which means the fuel is a clean waste which in turn makes it cheaper and less destructive to produce and fits into our own ideals of a Greener Energy.

CRE took on this project to manage itself which also included the construction of buildings, installation of pipework leaving just the Boilers and Heat exchangers suppliers to fit their products.

The system uses a purpose-built unit that houses three 100 Kw Power-chip Boilers each with their own individual fuel store hoppers with an Auger feed system that works on a Biomass fuel to Heat demand regulation. The hot water then passes through the boilers into a 4,000 litre storage vessel, from where it is pumped along a 1,000 metre length of flow and return heat insulated pipework which provides heat for eight large properties. Each property has its own heat exchanger where the heat from the hot water transfers into the property heating system. The cooler water then travels back to the boilers for re-heating in a supply and demand situation.

Pellet fuel delivery can either be bulk blown, elevator transfer or forklift big bags to fill the fuel storage bins. The waste/Ash produced each week amounts to two wheelbarrows from an input of six tonne of pellet.
