Landfill Gas

The LFG power station opened in 1996, with capital investment of £4m. In the following 25 years the LFG power station has generated aggregate revenues in excess of £50m. At its peak, it contributed approximately 80% of Dorset’s total generation of renewable power.

Project Description

Canford Renewable Energy (CRE) worked closely with Leverton Power Systems (now Finning), the UK Caterpillar dealer to design, build, and construct a 7 MW landfill gas (LFG) power station.  This power station has been in operation 24/7 since it was commissioned in 1996.

LFG power station produces electricity from methane gas that is captured from the nearby landfill site that ceased receiving waste in 2010. This plant operates at very high levels of availability (90%+).

CRE carries out all operations, repairs and maintenance at the power station using its inhouse team of highly skilled engineers.

CRE designed and installed a bespoke 24hr remote engine monitoring system for the power station. This system alerts the on-call engineer of any issues, so that they can be addressed quickly and efficiently, maintaining power out, and engine availability. This system has been in operation for over seven years.
